Just as everyone started to move on after world war one, world war two then begun in the 1940's which then effected rations and simplicity to come back into place. Although this did have a big impact on quite a few things it didn't strongly affect the fashion world as much as world war one did.
Although all of this a new aesthetic handbag emerged during this time, the smooth fluidity of the art deco style had changed to a military austere style which created quite a stir for the fashion industry and people started to notice this thing called 'fashion' evolving. All the bags during the 1940's became a lot bigger more practical and reflected a sense self-sufficiency. Due to the shortage on particular materials such as metal frames, zippers and leather manufactures began to improvise. They did this by using plastic and wood for frames as well as, synthetic fabrics such as rayon.

Due to these rationing's coming back into a place a lot of fabrics were hard to come by and luxury fabrics were pretty much impossible to get your hands on. Despite all of this women still tried to substitute these fabrics by using different things and even through this important time they were still taking the time to ensure they had their handbags. The drawstring bag that was a big hit a few centuries ago suddenly reappeared as women had to 'make do and mend' so quite a few women went back to these with them being homemade.

After the war had ended and the 1950's came around the post-war economic situation propelled handbags to icon status. It was no longer all about social status and socioeconomic divides but all about accessorizing your outfits with the best co-ordinating handbags you had or could get your hands on.
