The ancient Egyptians used a lot of stuff we use now a days back then however, its just modernized now. Not many people will agree with that but in hieroglyphics it shows them using objects that look similar and achieve the same thing as things we have now a days. The reason this relates very much so to the history of how the handbag came about is because although the advent of the 'man bag' is well documented in the 21st century we still primarily associate handbags originating in women's fashion but we are very wrong to think this. Handbags were actually around years and years ago and were worn by men. It was part of their artier many years ago and was used for convenience in their everyday duties. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics show men having purse like pouches tied round their waist and hanging from their shoulders. (see picture below to the left) It is believed that they had these bags to carry tools, goods and to sometimes store household items as cupboard in house were unknown at this point. They also had baskets and chests weaved together with hard wearing materials to hold goods, these were mainly kept at home though.
Egyptian Hieroglyphs Showing The Use Of Handbags
The handbags were believed to be made from various material which were widely available such as; grass, sedges, reeds, stalks such as flax, twigs, leaves, most frequently of the date and doum plants and occasionally of leather. They made their bags by simply intertwining and weaving the materials until it formed the bag shape form and felt like it had a high durability to carry the things they needed them for.
