Peasents Seed Bag
Bags were also mentioned in the bible and in particular cultures/religions just after the Egyptians which does also prove that they were around way before the 21st century and were indeed not firstly made to be a woman's accessory. The first religion to mention the use of them was in fact the bible. It mentions Judas Iscariot as having a purse. As well as this peasants from early rural societies used bags to transport their seeds. Although it may seem bags now have complete different purposes as bags used to when you think about it that really isn't the case. The thing that has changed is the necessities and what we class as important has changed for instance; back then they needed something to carry their seeds in or tools and we now need something to carry out desirable designer purses and expensive phones in. The main thing is the fact that back then it was all about practicality and not social status like now. In the 21st century its all about having the newest bag, the biggest name brand with the most luxurious fabric and look to it where as back then, it was all about strength, size and purpose. On top of all of that African priests carried beaded bags and also wore bags which were attached at the waist known as 'girdles'. This just goes to prove the point of the man bag being recycled through history into the 21st century fashion and proves that in fact handbags were originally for men.
